Tourism has enormous potential to transform lives, particularly in terms of job creation and human development.

In 2013 alone, the African continent welcomed 65 million visitors. By 2030, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) projects that Africa’s international tourist arrivals will rise to 134 million, an increase of 106%. In the latest issue of the Africa Tourism Monitor, a joint publication produced annually by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Africa Travel Association (ATA), and New York University’s Africa House – the focus is on Africa’s greatest asset: its people. Tanzania set to join East Africa single visa scheme

PassportThe East African Community (EAC), a regional bloc that also includes Burundi, is seeking to promote the region’s tourism potential and market member states as a single tourist destination.

Tanzania is ready to eventually join the single visa scheme – currently operational in the three East African countries of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda – amid efforts to promote the sub-region as a tourism destination.

As a country, we are now doing our homework to look at some issues like security, once one tourism destination comes to operation,” Tourism and Natural Resources Minister Lazaro Nyalandu said. Continue reading

International tourism exceeds expectations with arrivals up by 52 million in 2013

Ban ki MoonInternational tourist arrivals grew by 5% in 2013, reaching a record 1,087 million arrivals, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Despite global economic challenges, international tourism results were well above expectations, with an additional 52 million international tourists travelling the world in 2013. For 2014, UNWTO forecasts 4% to 4.5% growth – again, above the long term projections. Continue reading

Joint Visa for Kenya, #Uganda and Rwanda announced at World Travel Market

Joint VisaThe announcement during the ongoing World Tourism Market (WTM) in United Kingdom will see Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda adopt a joint visa that will facilitate free movement of tourist and citizens alike.

At present tourists travelling between the neighboring East African countries must obtain a separate visa for each nation, therefore Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda are partnering in order to simplify travel arrangements for holidaymakers, as well as creating a new brand for the whole region in turn opening up opportunities for joint marketing campaigns. #Uhuru Kenyatta holds bilateral talks with President Museveni of #Uganda

UhuruThe meeting between the two Presidents was attended by ministers and other dignitaries from both countries. The talks were held in a warm and cordial atmosphere. The two Heads of State noted the positive developments in the region including the election of President Uhuru Kenyatta through a free, fair and peaceful election. The presidents discussed issues pertaining to infrastructure development, Energy, trade facilitation and East Africa cooperation.They noted that non-tariff barriers including movement of labour continue to hinder intra-EAC trade and full implementation of the Common Market noted the delays in the clearing of goods at Mombasa port, and Malaba and agreed to take immediate measures to improve management of the Port and expedite clearance by URA at Malaba border points.

The two Presidents of Uganda and Kenya agreed to
• Implement a programme for Uganda to collect customs duties before goods are released from Mombasa port. For goods destined for warehousing in Uganda importers would continue to execute the general bond security.
• Jointly develop the Kapchorwa-Swam-Kitale road;
• Explore the possibility of Kenya investing in quality chemicals industry which manufactures aids and malaria drugs.
• Coordinate joint disarmament of cattle rustlers on both sides of the border and encourage other countries in the region to complement these efforts.
• Furthermore, the Presidents agreed to establish a mechanism for mutual recognition of quality standards within EAC framework and other internationally recognized standards in which Kenya and Uganda are members.
• Establish a joint permanent commission for regular consultations.

His Excellency Paul Kagame joined the meeting and the three held Trilateral talks.The three Heads of State of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda agreed as follows:

RAILWAYS

Agreed to revamp the existing railway network and also construct new standard gauge railway line and extend it to Rwanda, including joint mobilization of resources

OIL PIPELINES

Develop an oil pipelines for finished products from Eldoret to Kampala and extend to Rwanda Develop a crude oil pipeline from Uganda to Kenya link to South Sudan.

REFINERY

Explore the possibility of EAC partner states to invest in the oil Refinery to be constructed in Uganda

ELECTRICITY

To enhance electricity generation and distribution by exploring and utilizing the resources within each partner state, including exploring other alternatives sources like renewable energy, nuclear and geothermal.

CUSTOMS TERRTORY

To strengthen the single customs territory and implement all the provisions therein wheretaxes will be collected at the entry points like Mombasa, Mpondwe, Oluhura

FAST TRACK POLITICAL FEDERATION

By setting up a committee that will draft an EAC political federation framework that will be considered and discussed by all relevant parties.

EAC E-IDENTITY CARDS

The e-identity cards have already been introduced in the Kenya and Rwanda and Uganda should follow suit. This will ease the movement of persons and services.

EAC SINGLE TOURIST VISA

Fast track the establishment of EAC single tourist visas to facilitate the tourist industry inthe region

DISTRIBUTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Distribute responsibilities as follows:

A) Republic of Uganda– will spearhead the issues of railway development and politicalfederation
B) Republic of Kenya – will spearhead – issues of electricity generation and distribution andoil pipe development
C) Republic of Rwanda – will spearhead the issues of customs, the single tourist visa, and EAC e-identity card

MOBILIZATION OF RESOURCES

Committees will be instituted chaired by respective partner state and the chairs will be responsible for coordination of mobilization of the necessary resources.

FOLLOW UP AND MONITORING

To meet every two months to review progress of implementation of the above decisions. The 1st meeting will be held in Nairobi, Kenya in august 2013 and subsequent meeting in Kigali, Rwanda in October 2013. H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta, H.E President Paul Kagame thanked their host President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of the Republic of Uganda for the warm and cordial hospitality extended to them and their delegation during their stay.

7Uganda has once again won a prestigious award with the source of the Nile voted as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

This came at the heels of Uganda being voted a Birding Destination in 2013 among other accolades last year that included; Bwindi and Murchison falls national park voted best birding destination; Virunga Massive-must see in a life time; Tree Climbing Lions-picture of the week;  Kidepo Natural Park-Pristine Destination; Canada and New York Times, named Uganda top best destinations.
